This is important, pay attention....

Why weren't liberals outraged over the 2004 murder of Dutch filmmaker Theo van Gogh? And why don't they celebrate his colleague Ayaan Hirsi Ali? Here's an answer....(Ron Rosenbaum)

UPDATE - Outraged or not, van Gogh's works are being mined by Hollywood.

I really enjoyed Ian Burama's book on the subject of Van Gogh's murder.

Rosenbaum's post introduced me to the idea of "enlightenment fundamentalism," which (used pejoratively) means the assertion of liberal Democratic values (freedom of speech, women's rights, etc.) as superior to those of another culture.

There's a politically correct school of "multiculturalism," which leads to Westerners like Buruma criticizing Ayaan Hirsi Ali (a Somali activist and author who speaks out against the treatment of women in Islamic society) and denying anyone looking to sever ties with their culture that right. Here's a (long) piece with a summary and good links. As you can see I'm a proud enlightenment fundamentalist....

Thanks for the link - I spent quite a bit of time in Japan, and South Korea, and I have enjoyed reading what Buruma has written about that part of the world, so my assessment of his latest book isn't the necessarily the most objective.

Thanks for the link, I plan to check it out next!
